The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without Jaylon Tyson against the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday, while Meleek Thomas’ availability remains uncertain.

Tyson has been ruled out with a right ankle sprain, and Thomas is questionable with right foot inflammation.

The designations leave Cleveland with one confirmed absence and another decision to make as Kenny Atkinson prepares his bench rotation.

The teams are scheduled to play Saturday, Oct. 31, at 8 p.m. EST in Milwaukee.

Cavs injury updates for Bucks game

The latest updates concern two players who appeared on Cleveland’s injury report ahead of Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks:

Player Status vs. Bucks Injury
Jaylon Tyson Out Right ankle sprain
Meleek Thomas Questionable Right foot inflammation

Tyson’s ankle designation is a change from the cervical strain listed in Cleveland’s earlier injury report for Atlanta. He was initially questionable for that matchup before being cleared to play.

Thomas was also questionable heading into the Hawks game, but the two players received different final decisions: Thomas was out and Tyson was available.

Friday’s update reverses the certainty surrounding Tyson: He is already ruled out for Milwaukee. Thomas still has a chance to return, although a questionable designation does not establish that he will play or how many minutes he could handle.

Neither of the two updates provides a longer-term recovery timetable.

Why Meleek Thomas’ status matters for Cleveland

Meleek Thomas

Thomas’ injury has interrupted an early opportunity to establish himself in Atkinson’s rotation. In his NBA debut, he scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting with four made 3-pointers.

That is a one-game sample, but it illustrates the scoring Cleveland would welcome back. Four of his six field goals came from beyond the arc, accounting for 12 of his 16 points.

Atkinson’s interest in Thomas also extends to how the offense functions around its established guards. The coach previously explained why Cleveland needed another ball-handler alongside Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.

That role is relevant to Saturday’s availability decision. Another player who can bring the ball up or continue a possession after the initial action gives Atkinson a different option from simply adding a shooter around the same primary creators.

After Wednesday’s game, Atkinson offered another indication of his confidence in Thomas.

The comment preceded Thomas’ absence in Atlanta. It offers context for the opportunity waiting for him, rather than a new assessment of his foot injury.

What the absences could mean for the Cavs’ rotation

Tyson’s absence and Thomas’ uncertain status create separate decisions. Cleveland must account for Tyson being unavailable, while keeping an alternative ready if Thomas cannot return.

Mario Hezonja is a potential option for additional work at forward, while Sam Merrill or Tyrese Proctor could be considered if Cleveland needs more guard minutes.

Those are possible responses to the injuries, not announced changes to the rotation or starting lineup.

Atkinson could also spread the available minutes across multiple players instead of assigning either player’s usual role to a single replacement. Thomas’ final status will help determine how much flexibility the coach has.

For now, the confirmed news is that Tyson will miss the Milwaukee matchup. Cleveland is still waiting to learn whether Thomas can join the available group.
