10 Assets Cleveland Cavaliers Could Acquire During 2016-17 Season

Ben Gordon is a very interesting piece that the Cavs may choose to acquire should Smith not re-sign. But even if Smith does re-sign, Gordon could be a good addition to the roster as a backup shooting guard nonetheless. If Cleveland signs Gordon, it could free them up to trade Shumpert, who has shown some promise over the years, but did not make a large leap last season and is currently holding up a large chunk of cap space in a contract year.

Signing Gordon would likely be very cheap, as his only other option at this point seems to be a Euroleague contract. And dumping Shumpert would take some of the financial burden off the Cavaliers, which means they could continue spending for a few more seasons.

Gordon is not the same player that he once was, but he is a smart veteran that would be a very good asset off the bench on a championship-caliber roster.

Also, Gordon would simply be happy to be on an NBA roster, let alone have an opportunity to win an NBA championship, so any previous hesitation about any character issues would likely be non-existent.
