Memories of 41Â years of largely miserable baseball melted away in a magical season where the Indians, two years after leaving the drab and drafty confines of Cleveland Stadium for the intimacy of brand new Jacobs Field, ran away with the AL Central by going 100-44. But that impressive record and the 207 home runs they pounded out, led by 50 from Belle and 31 from Manny Ramirez, were rendered meaningless against the Atlanta Braves.
The Indians managed just one hit in eight innings against Tom Glavine in a 1-0 Game 6 loss as the Braves clinched their first World Series title since the franchise was based in Milwaukee. They batted only .179 for the series against a staff that featured Glavine, John Smoltz and Greg Maddux, with catcher Tony Pena recording their only hit in the final game on a bloop single.
