While he was only a spare part on the first two of the Los Angeles Lakers’ three consecutive NBA titles, Lue was there to experience what went into making sure that the ultimate goal was reached. Prior to 2000, the Lakers had been much like the Cavaliers: a talented team with multiple superstars that had come up short.

Then, in his first season as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics, Lue was part of a team that reached Game 7 of the finals before coming up four points short. Throw in last season’s run with the Cavaliers and the concern over having a rookie coach not having the background to grab an NBA title fades considerably.

It seems absurd to say that the head coach of a team leading its conference wasn’t getting the most out of his team, especially with the injury issues the Cavaliers faced. However, not being able to find a smooth harmony with three potential All-Star players in the starting lineup is one of the reasons that David Blatt is now on the outside looking in. The view from here is that Tyronn Lue will be able to achieve that feat.
