6. Ehlo Goes from Hero to Zero

Michael Jordan vs. Cavaliers, May 7, 1989

What would have been a dramatic moment in Cavaliers history quickly turned into a nightmare that still resonates 26 years later. That moment would have recalled the heroics of Cavs guard Craig Ehlo, who had scored 15 points with a badly sprained ankle during the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the team’s first round playoff series against the Chicago Bulls.

Ehlo hit a trio of three pointers, including one with 52 seconds left that gave Cleveland a 98-97 lead. Then, after connecting on a driving layup with three seconds left to again give the team a lead at 100-99, all the Cavaliers had to do was keep the Bulls from scoring.

Instead, Michael Jordan connected on his buzzer-beating shot, a highlight that’s seemingly on an endless loop come playoff time. Clearly visible during “The Shot is Ehlo” trying to prevent Jordan from establishing a building block to his legacy—and coming up inches short.
