The Cleveland Cavaliers could be forced to change their starting lineup against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday, with Peyton Watson questionable and Jaylon Tyson already ruled out.

Watson is listed with right hamstring tightness/soreness, while Tyson is sidelined by a right ankle sprain. Those designations remain in place on the NBA’s 3:30 p.m. Eastern injury report.

The uncertainty affects more than Cleveland’s bench. Watson has been part of the starting group throughout the opening six games, and Tyson’s absence leaves the Cavs with one fewer perimeter option if a change becomes necessary.

Cavs injury report vs. Thunder

Cleveland’s listed absences include both injured players and players unavailable for G League reasons:

Player Status Reason
Peyton Watson Questionable Right hamstring tightness/soreness
Jaylon Tyson Out Right ankle sprain
Nae’Qwan Tomlin Out Low back stress reaction
Khalifa Diop Out G League assignment
Ernest Udeh Jr. Out G League two-way designation

Tyson was also ruled out ahead of Saturday’s Milwaukee game. His continued absence means Cleveland cannot simply turn to him if Watson is unavailable.

Meleek Thomas does not appear on Monday afternoon’s report. That follows the rookie’s upgrade to probable before the Bucks matchup, when he had been dealing with right foot inflammation/soreness.

The G League listings should be separated from the medical concerns. Diop and Udeh are listed as out for reasons other than injury, while Watson, Tyson and Tomlin are the players with injury designations.

Peyton Watson’s status could end Cavs’ lineup streak

Cleveland has opened each of its first six games with James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Watson, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

Watson’s absence would require a different starting combination for the first time this season. That would give Kenny Atkinson two connected decisions: who opens the game and how to redistribute the remaining perimeter minutes with Tyson unavailable.

Those decisions do not necessarily have the same answer. A player could enter the starting lineup while the extra minutes are spread across several reserves, depending on the combinations Atkinson wants around Harden and Mitchell.

The injury report does not announce a replacement starter or a revised rotation. Watson’s questionable designation also leaves open the possibility that Cleveland keeps its usual starting five.

Until the team makes that decision, a projected lineup should not be treated as confirmed.

Thunder will be without six players

Oklahoma City’s injury list contains six confirmed absences for Monday:

Player Status Reason
Alex Caruso Out Right ankle sprain
Chet Holmgren Out Right knee injury recovery
Jalen Williams Out Left ankle surgery
Cason Wallace Out Left shoulder surgery
Nikola Topic Out Low back surgery
Thomas Sorber Out Right knee surgery

The Thunder’s absences span the perimeter and frontcourt, leaving both coaching staffs to work around unavailable players.

For Cleveland, the unresolved question is whether Watson can join the available group or whether Atkinson must adjust his starters as well as his bench.

Monday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern in Cleveland. The Cavs’ schedule then sends them to Oklahoma City for another meeting Wednesday, making this the first of two consecutive games against the Thunder.
