The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly have reached an agreement that would put their games on DirecTV, adding a viewing option as fans question the accessibility of the team’s broadcasts.

The Cavs and DAZN struck a deal with DirecTV to carry games this season, beginning with the home opener against the Brooklyn Nets. He identified channel 660 as the destination for that game and said a formal announcement is expected next week.

For fans who already subscribe to DirecTV, the report raises the possibility of watching Cleveland through a service they already use. Whether that eliminates the need for another purchase depends on details that were not included in the report.

What the reported DirecTV deal changes

The immediate news concerns distribution: Danny Cunningham’s report identifies another provider for Cavs games.

It does not establish which subscription tiers qualify, whether there will be an added charge or whether both satellite and streaming customers will receive the same access.

Those distinctions matter before anyone changes a subscription. An existing customer needs to know whether channel 660 is included in that customer’s plan, while someone considering a new service needs the full price and eligibility terms.

The report also does not announce a refund policy for people who already purchased a DAZN pass. Fans who have paid for the season should not read the addition of another distributor as confirmation that their existing purchase can be refunded.

Nor does the reported agreement establish new carriage through other television providers. The next announcement will need to explain the reach of the DirecTV arrangement before viewers can make a reliable comparison.

Cavs already have a separate free-TV package

The DirecTV development is separate from the 15-game free broadcast package announced in September by Gray Media and the Cavaliers in partnership with DAZN.

That package includes local broadcasts on WOIO and WUAB, with statewide coverage through Rock Entertainment Sports Network. The same games are available free on DAZN.

The published schedule begins with these two matchups. All times are Eastern:

Date Matchup Time Local station
Oct. 26 Minnesota at Cleveland 7 p.m. WUAB
Oct. 29 Cleveland at Atlanta 7 p.m. WUAB

Saturday’s Brooklyn game is not listed in that free-TV package. The reported DirecTV debut therefore should not be confused with the first free simulcast, which comes Monday against Minnesota. The station notes that its schedule is subject to change.

The agreement follows criticism of Cavs viewing costs

The report comes after Ken Carman criticized the Cavs’ television access, questioning whether fans would pay for another subscription to follow the team. His criticism focused on the possibility that the viewing barrier could discourage people from watching.

The timing does not establish that those complaints caused the reported DirecTV agreement.

In the September announcement of its Cavs partnership, DAZN listed a standard monthly option at $19.99 and a season option at $119.99. The Ultimate options were listed at $24.99 per month and $139.99 for the season.

The announcement also excluded games selected for exclusive national broadcasts from the local streaming package. A local viewing subscription consequently should not be treated as access to every Cavaliers game.

For existing DirecTV customers, the useful next step is checking whether the reported channel is available under their particular service and package.

For fans without DirecTV, the free simulcast dates remain a separate way to follow part of the season without purchasing the Cavs’ paid DAZN package.
