Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals was a nightmare for the Cleveland Cavaliers and veteran guard James Harden, who saw a 22-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate en route to an overtime loss.
Harden has received as much blame as anyone for the way the game unraveled for the Cavs, and the debacle even has former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins wondering how bad Harden wants it.
Boogie Cousins GOES OFF on James Harden for the Cavs losing Game 1 🗣️
"It's about him and his urgency, nothing else. … Does he want it or not? … That's why it was a 44-10 run…that's not winning basketball."@MichelleDBeadle | @boogiecousins | @ChandlerParsons | @TeamLou23 pic.twitter.com/SRfeLv2NSw

Harden had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists in Game 1, but he shot just 5-of-16 from the field and 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. He also turned the ball over six times and was frequently attacked on the defensive end. Cleveland head coach Kenny Atkinson, who many feel had a bad game himself, has received heat for the way he managed Harden in the loss.
When the Cavs acquired Harden, they were surely aware of his shaky playoff track record, but they’re now getting an up-close look at how inconsistent he can be in the postseason. Since the start of the second round, he has shot just 37.1 percent from the field and 27.1 percent from beyond the arc while averaging 4.6 turnovers per game.
He has certainly had some big games during the Cavs’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals, and overall in the postseason, he’s still averaging 19.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game, but his efficiency, turnovers and defense have all caused issues at times.
Hopefully, Harden will be motivated to make a statement in Game 2. Many are already writing Cleveland off in the Eastern Conference Finals given the way the team choked in Game 1, but there are still plenty of opportunities ahead for the Cavs to get back into the series. A win in Game 2, however unlikely it may seem, would tie the series at 1-1 and shift home-court advantage in Cleveland’s favor.
The Cavs don’t want their playoff run to end, but whenever it does, the word has been that the team is expected to give Harden a new deal this offseason. He may have work to do in the coming games if he wants fans to feel good about that possibility.
