While people love to discuss the superteam in Golden State, the truth is is that no team is better than its bench, and in last year’s NBA Finals, Golden State’s bench proved to be that much more valuable than Cleveland’s.
While players like Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston, and David West offered valuable playing time off the bench, hitting 52.9, 53.6, and 58.8 percent of their shots respectively, the Cavs’ bench players fell short. Richard Jefferson shot 44.4 percent, Kyle Korver shot 36.8 percent, Iman Shumpert shot 23.5 percent, and Deron Williams shot just 12.5 percent. If anything, the Cavs’ offseason has proven that general manager Koby Altman and the front office recognized that disparity and made shoring up the supporting cast a primary goal.
Either Wade or J.R. Smith will end up controlling the shooting guard position, and whoever is coming off the bench will likely be one of the best bench players in the NBA. While Smith would inject points in bunches coming off the bench, Wade would be able to act as a court general while the starters rest. Along with other newcomers like Rose and Crowder, Wade has added a level of talent across the Cavs’ roster that very few teams in the NBA enjoy.
