When Collin Sexton was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, he was destined to become yet another teenage millionaire playing in the NBA. Just a few days after the draft, the Cavs signed Sexton to a four-year, $20.2 million deal.
That’s quite a chunk of change for the 19-year-old guard. Considering the deal, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to learn that Sexton has enjoyed several shopping sprees since signing his deal. Instead of spending on a new car or house, however, Sexton has remained quite frugal.
When asked by ESPN’s Chris Forsberg what his biggest purchase has been since he signed his rookie deal, Sexton’s answer was as hilarious as it was simple.
“Man, I haven’t bought anything,” he said. “No, I’m cheap. I’m real cheap.”
While the short-winded nature of Sexton’s response is certainly funny, it’s just another sign that the talented youngster has a good head on his shoulders. Players in the past have been known to make extravagant purchases once they enter the league. Some of those very same players have faced serious financial trouble later in life.
It seems Sexton is much more interested in saving for the future rather than living in luxury at the moment.
If all goes according to plan, Sexton will have a whole lot more money to save when he signs his next NBA contract in several years.
