Report: 2 NBA executives peg Collin Sexton’s value at $10-12 million per season

NBA free agency is set to begin on Thursday evening, and one of the most interesting players that will be available on the market is Collin Sexton.

Sexton is a restricted free agent, which means the Cleveland Cavaliers can match any offer he receives from other teams around the league.

All offseason long, there have been rumors flying around regarding what type of contract he will receive. Two NBA executives recently gave their opinions about the young guard’s value.

“The market for restricted free agent Collin Sexton has shrunk the last few days, with Detroit burning through most of its available cap space and Washington acquiring Monte Morris in a trade with Denver,” wrote Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated. “Sexton has said he wants to return to Cleveland. The Cavaliers say they want him back. The question is, can the two sides agree on a number? The Cavs are expected to match reasonable offers for Sexton — two execs pegged Sexton’s value at $10-12 million per season — increasing the chances that Sexton, a 24-point per game scorer in ’20-21, returns to Cleveland.”

It will definitely be interesting to see what types of offers Sexton receives. Of course, he only played in 11 games during the 2021-22 season after suffering a torn left meniscus. He averaged 16.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 45.0 percent from the field and 24.4 percent from beyond the arc prior to the injury.

Sexton’s absence allowed Cavs guard Darius Garland to become the team’s best player. Garland was named an All-Star last season for the first time in his career.

While Sexton and Garland are both talented players, many have questioned whether or not they should start alongside one another in the Cavs’ backcourt.

Throughout his short NBA career, Sexton has made it clear that he can really score the ball. During the 2020-21 season, he averaged 24.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.0 steal per game on 47.5 percent shooting from the field and 37.1 percent shooting from 3-point range.

Cavs fans will find out soon enough whether or not Sexton returns to the team for the upcoming regular season.
