The Cleveland Cavaliers seem to be on the verge of a roster overhaul, and according to a recent report, that overhaul will likely include the departure of veteran point guard George Hill.
According to Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal, Hill is likely to be traded before the trade deadline arrives.
“[Koby] Altman, who referred to his acquisitions as ‘my talent’ in explaining [Tyronn] Lue’s firing, has seen it fail him,” Ridenour wrote. “He overestimated the inconsistent [Rodney] Hood. Hill, a willing teacher for [Collin] Sexton, will likely be traded by the Feb. 7 deadline. Sexton, 19, is a project. [Jordan] Clarkson has been the Cavs’ most consistent scorer, but isn’t lighting it up for 20 a night. [Larry] Nance excels in every facet except for offense on a team that needs points above all.”
Hill had been averaging 13.0 points and 2.4 assists per game this season before he went down with a sprained right shoulder. He has missed the past five games for the Cavs, and even when he does return, Cavs head coach Larry Drew has stated that Sexton, who has averaged 18.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists over the last five games, could very well hold onto the starting point guard role.
As it becomes clear that the Cavs are engaging in a complete rebuild, it is also becoming quite evident that many players that are currently on the roster may not remain in Cleveland for much longer. J.R. Smith has already parted ways with the team and several recent reports indicate that Kyle Korver could soon be on the move as well.
It will be interesting to see what kind of players or assets the Cavs look for in return for the veterans on their roster.
Considering the fact that the Cavs seem committed to the tank and rebuild model, they will likely target younger players and upcoming draft picks so that they can help bolster their young core.
