When Derrick Rose signed a one-year, $2.1 million deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, it was clear that he was betting on himself. So far, the bet has seemed to pay off as Rose has been one of the Cavs’ many bright spots during preseason play.
While Rose is known for his quiet demeanor off the court, he has recently been opening up to reporters regarding how happy he is about his decision this offseason to sign with the Cavs.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Rose perfectly explained why signing the one-year deal was the right call.
“I get a chance to reintroduce myself back to the league. I get to bet on myself,” Rose said. “That was one of the reasons I came here, I get to bet on myself. And I’m from Chicago, I’ve got that hustling side; it’s in me, man. Next time you’ve got to pay me, you’ve got to pay me double, so it’s fine with me.”
K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune spoke with Rose about whether or not the NBA has forgotten about the three-time All-Star. By his response, it is clear that Rose could not be happier to begin this chapter of his career.
Johnson added that the former NBA MVP is not only playing well, but feeling great.
There are a number of new faces playing for the Cavaliers this season, but none have more to prove than Rose. At 29 years old, Rose could have many more years in the league if he is able to stay healthy. With fellow Cavs point guard Isaiah Thomas still rehabbing a lingering hip injury, Rose will have an opportunity to prove that he can still succeed as a starting point guard in this league. If he succeeds, Rose’s choice to bet on himself this offseason could end up being one of the best decisions of his career.
