Since only two inter-conference games take place between teams every year, over 60 percent of the Cavaliers’ games are against Eastern Conference foes. With more teams on the Western side putting up better records, the belief is that James is padding his statistics against weaker teams.
The problem in making that claim is that during the 2015-16 regular season, James averaged 29 points against Oklahoma City, over 25 points against San Antonio, nearly 25 points against the Los Angeles Clippers and led the Cavaliers to a 5-1 record in those games. While he only averaged slightly over 20 points in two regular season games against Golden State, he averaged 29.7 points per game against them in last year’s NBA Finals.
