In the vacuum created by Michael Jordan’s first of three retirements, the Rockets filled the void by winning NBA titles for two consecutive years. The focal point of this team was center Hakeem Olajuwon, who led the team in scoring and rebounding, with his scoring output virtually doubling the next closest teammate.
The quartet that joined Olajuwon in the starting lineup: Otis Thorpe, Robert Horry, Vernon Maxwell and Kenny Smith, wasn’t bad. However, considering they went to the limit to come back and defeat the New York Knicks in the Finals, this is another group that would never have won without Olajuwon in the paint.
