The Cleveland Cavaliers recently inked Australian player Luke Travers to a two-way contract, and Travers used a popular phrase among NBA fans to react to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski breaking the news of his deal.
The Cavaliers’ decision to sign Travers comes just a few weeks after a report surfaced suggesting that the team was still trying to figure out what to do with him, with a two-way contract seeming like the most logical fit at the time. In the end, he will indeed play the upcoming season on a two-way deal.
He was granted release from his contract with Melbourne United earlier this month and was hoping to join the Cavs.
Cleveland drafted Travers with one of the final picks of the 2022 NBA Draft, as the Cavaliers used the No. 56 overall pick on him. He has yet to play in a regular-season game for the Cavaliers (due to being stashed), though he was a mainstay on the franchise’s Summer League team for the past few seasons.
Travers was part of Cleveland’s Summer League team in each of the last three years, including the 2023 iteration of the squad that went on to win the Summer League title. He played in four games with Cleveland during this year’s Las Vegas Summer League. He averaged 8.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
He spent the 2023-24 campaign playing in the National Basketball League (or NBL). Across 36 games played and 34 starts for Melbourne United during that stretch, he averaged 12.4 points on 51.7 percent shooting from the field coupled with 7.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest.
All things considered, fans of the Cavaliers shouldn’t count on Travers seeing the floor very often with the team during the upcoming 2024-25 regular season. However, he could potentially play quite a bit for the Cavaliers’ G League affiliate, the Cleveland Charge. Players inked to two-way deals are paid just one salary for their time spent in the NBA as well as the G League.
