In an attempt to possibly sign newly acquired Patrick McCaw to a more team-friendly contract, the Cleveland Cavaliers have decided to waive the point guard after signing him to a two-year, non-guaranteed offer sheet.
The move may seem puzzling at first, but the Cavs likely signed him initially to get him off of the Golden State Warriors. McCaw had been a restricted free agent to start the season, which meant that the Warriors could have matched Cleveland’s offer.
If the Cavs have the intention of signing McCaw, they are taking a huge gamble, as several playoff contenders have expressed interest in signing the third-year guard. If McCaw clears waivers, he would be able to sign with any team in the league of his choosing.
