Report: Multiple Cavs Members Believe Cleveland Has ‘Best Chance’ to Land LeBron

With the NBA potentially just days away from finding out where LeBron James plans to continue his career, fans are searching for clues as to where he plans on going.

As James will likely again become a free agent in his storied career, it seems this time, the four-time MVP is not looking to be wooed.

Instead, he’s looking to make the best decision for himself and his family.

Based on a recent report by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, it seems there are several people within the Cleveland Cavaliers organization that still plan on seeing James in the Wine and Gold next season:

“In the past week, two members of the 2017-18 Cavaliers — a player and another staff member — relayed to ESPN that they believe Cleveland has the best chance of any team to land LeBron.”

McMenamin went on to explain why staying in Cleveland, even if it’s just for one more season, makes a lot of sense for James and his family:

“James told Cleveland.com in April that the two determining factors for his summer decision would be family and winning. He elaborated after Cleveland was eliminated from the Finals, mentioning his family — particularly his two sons, LeBron [James] Jr. and Bryce Maximus [James] — would factor into his decision as he considers their futures, but added, ‘It ultimately will come down to me.’

“James’ oldest son is 13 and entering the eighth grade. James could opt out of the final year of his contract with the Cavs on Friday and sign with the Cavs on a one-plus-one deal — the first year guaranteed with the second year being a player option — and align his personal decision as to whether to leave Cleveland for good or not with the same time Bronny will be choosing which high school to enroll in.

“Some might say that would mean the circus following James’ decision for another 12 months, but when has James shied away from the spotlight? As former Cavs general manager David Griffin once put it, James ‘thrives on chaos.'”

There’s no doubt that it’s an interesting point to make. Perhaps James does plan for his career to eventually take him to Los Angeles, but perhaps it’s not quite yet. For fans, that would mean another season of marveling at James’ on-court brilliance. For the organization, it would mean another year to work to try to convince the three-time NBA champion that there is no place quite like home.

Whatever James decides to do in the coming days will surely have an impact on the future of the Cavs’ organization. What it won’t change is his legacy in Cleveland. He came back in 2014 to bring a championship to Cleveland. In 2016, he did just that.

The only question that remains is whether or not he’s going to try to bring more NBA championships to Northeast Ohio.
