In the short time frame that exists for the Cleveland Cavaliers to savor their Game 7 victory over the Indiana Pacers and get ready for Game 1 of their second-round matchup against the Toronto Raptors, J.R. Smith took time to send a joking social media message to teammate LeBron James.
The 33-year-old James powered the Cavaliers to a tight 105-101 win on Sunday afternoon, scoring 45 points in the do-or-die situation. During the first half, James scored 26 of those points, which helped the Cavs take an 11-point halftime lead. That cushion was badly needed during the third quarter when the Pacers charged back to briefly take the lead.
Without the contributions of the durable James throughout the series against the Pacers, the Cavaliers likely would have seen their season come to an end. Instead, they now advance to face the top seed in the Eastern Conference in Toronto, a team they’ve defeated twice before in each of the last two postseasons. James is seeking to reach the NBA Finals for the eighth year in a row, putting him in the rare category of only a few Boston Celtics players from their dynasty era in the 1960s.
Game 1 of the Cavaliers-Raptors best-of-seven series is on Tuesday night at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, with the game getting underway just after 8 p.m. ET.
