7 Backup Point Guards Cleveland Cavaliers Could Be Looking to Target

3. Jarrett Jack

The 33-year-old former Cavalier is currently trying to come back from knee surgery that cut his 2015-16 campaign to just 32 games. He was released by the Atlanta Hawks just prior to the start of the 2016-17 season, but is close to being fully recovered. He’s been good for 4.5 assists per game and 11.1 points for his career and previously played with Kyrie Irving during the 2013-14 season.

2. Norris Cole

A former teammate of LeBron James in Miami and someone who played college ball down the street from Quicken Loans Arena for Cleveland State University, Cole could be the perfect fit for Cleveland’s backup point guard slot. He’s currently recovering from an undisclosed injury after starting the season playing in China, so he may not be fully ready. Yet he’s someone that James believes in, though his career 7.1 points and 2.8 assists per game don’t stand out and his 32.6 percent 3-point shooting doesn’t grab anyone’s attention.

1. Mario Chalmers

A veteran who is still in the process of bouncing back from an Achilles injury suffered last March while playing for Memphis, Chalmers is another former Heat teammate of James,’ though he’s someone with much more experience than Cole. He’s averaged 9.0 points and 3.8 assists for his career, with his long-range shooting connecting at nearly 36 percent, numbers that might be good enough for the Cavaliers to consider.

When James comments on a situation, his words usually carry plenty of weight in the Cavs’ front office. It’s likely that any move to bring in a point guard has been expedited by his remarks and it wouldn’t be surprising to see any of the players on this list be the player they choose.
