Three Key Free Agents the Cavs Could Be Looking to Target in July

2. Mario Chalmers

Mario Chalmers is 30-years-old and recovering from an Achilles tendon tear, but his repertoire with James cannot be ignored in a situation like this.

Chalmers was a member of a Miami Heat team that won back-to-back titles over the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. He was the starting point guard on those squads and his unique ability to both play on and off the ball would make him a solid piece on a Cavs roster that would require him to do both at times.

Since Dellavedova has departed for the Milwaukee Bucks, Chalmers would be perfectly suited to step into his role. He defends well, can play with James as well as a ball-dominant guard like Kyrie Irving, and knocks down the 3-pointer at a 35.8 percent clip. And that number even reached as high as 40.9 percent when James was his teammate.

There is an obvious risk with signing a player returning from an injury as devastating as an Achilles tear, but the Cavs have the infrastructure already in place with Mo Williams and Iman Shumpert on the roster. This will allow Chalmers to work his way back into the lineup at a pace that best suits him. It has also been reported that Chalmers is ahead of schedule on his recovery, meaning he could be back sometime during training camp.

And again, he is a veteran who knows what it takes to win a championship, as well as back-to-back titles. Those players are hard to find in the NBA, and they are necessary additions to make when attempting to repeat as NBA champions.
