Irving is the unquestioned starter at point guard, but it’s clear that the Cavaliers need the three-headed monster of Irving, Mo Williams and Matthew Dellavedova to cover all 48 minutes of action.
However, Irving’s rustiness and the fact that Mo Williams provided less than five minutes due to coming back from his own injury resulted in Dellavedova playing over 30 minutes. As the Cavs discovered in last year’s finals, Dellavedova’s effectiveness has a threshold when it comes to minutes on the court.
Dellavedova playing that amount of time against weaker teams doesn’t necessarily hurt Cleveland, but when going up against players like Stephen Curry and teams like Golden State, it’s not something that’s a recipe for success.
