Donovan Mitchell on his basketball legacy: ‘I want to win a (expletive) ring’

By simply glancing at Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell’s career playoff numbers, plenty of people would maybe assume that he’s played deep into the playoffs. He’s certainly earned his reputation as a playoff riser, as he’s averaged 28.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest across 63 playoff games.

However, Mitchell has yet to win a ring at the highest level or even so much as advanced past the second round. When asked what he wants his basketball legacy to look like, the guard made it abundantly clear that he wants to add a championship to his NBA resume, saying he doesn’t “really care about anything else besides winning a championship.”

“A champion,” he responded.

“That’s first and foremost. It’s the only thing. I don’t really care about anything else besides winning a championship. I wake up every day, I work as hard as I do and I play this game to, yes, respect is great, but I want to win a (expletive) ring.

“I don’t want to just be this scorer. I don’t want to be this guy who has all these accolades and not win. I want to win at the highest level and that takes a group and that’s what my focus is on a day-to-day basis. If you continue the journey to win a championship, good things come your way.

“Every year of my career I’ve gotten better. Every year of my career I’ve gotten something that I haven’t gotten before, so as long as the team succeeds, you succeed. That’s been my mindset throughout.”

Fortunately, Mitchell just so happens to play for a Cavaliers team that has a real shot to be the last squad standing in the 2026 NBA Playoffs. The team’s path to the championship series looks more open than ever as well with the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers taking notable steps back compared to last season. Boston and Indiana are the last two teams to represent the East in the NBA Finals.

Winning a championship is anything but easy, but the Cavaliers’ best chance to win a title with their core four to date could very well be this season. Mitchell is maybe Cleveland’s most important player, but the team has other great players behind him in floor general Darius Garland and big men Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Mobley is on the heels of winning his first Defensive Player of the Year award.

Cleveland certainly isn’t lacking in depth behind its highly talented starting lineup, either, as its supporting cast is among the best in the league on paper.

With a little luck, lot of hard work and plenty of great basketball, the Cavaliers could help Mitchell fulfill his desired legacy and win him a ring sooner rather than later. Here’s to hoping that Mitchell will be hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy along with the remainder of the team following the conclusion of the 2026 NBA Finals.
