Report: J.B. Bickerstaff’s reputation as ‘culture-changer, motivator and communicator’ helped him land Pistons job

According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s reputation as a “culture-changer, motivator and communicator” helped him land his new gig with the Detroit Pistons.

“Following a brief search that began just a few weeks ago, one led by new president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, Bickerstaff emerged as Detroit’s top choice given his reputation as a culture-changer, motivator and communicator,” Fedor wrote.

On Sunday, Detroit’s decision to hire Bickerstaff as Monty Williams’ replacement at head coach became known to the public.

Williams was fired by the Pistons after just one season at the helm. In the 2023-24 regular season, he coached Detroit to just a 14-68 record, which was the worst in the NBA.

In Bickerstaff, the Pistons are getting someone with extensive experience as a head coach at the NBA level. He served as the leader from the sidelines for three different teams in the Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies and Cavaliers prior to taking the Detroit job.

Across 545 total regular-season games as an NBA head coach, Bickerstaff has coached his teams to a combined record of 255-290, which equates to a winning percentage of .468.

Bickerstaff also has seven playoff victories to his name as a head coach, with six of those wins coming during his stint leading the Cavaliers. Under Bickerstaff, the Cavaliers defeated the Orlando Magic in seven games in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, which marked the team’s first playoff series victory in six years.

But Bickerstaff’s new team is seemingly a ways away from contending for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. After all, Detroit is fresh off its worst season in franchise history from a record standpoint and lost a franchise record 28 games in a row at one point.

However, Bickerstaff will also have plenty of young talent at his disposal, considering players like Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren are all fresh off solid seasons. Plus, Detroit drafted Ron Holland II with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and the 18-year-old averaged 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in 14 games with the G League Ignite during the 2023-24 regular season.
