Former Cleveland Cavaliers big man and current ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins shared a detailed explanation of his feud with Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.
Perkins revealed that things started when he called out the two Hall of Famers for their criticism of the New York Knicks.
“Well one, they got in their feelings, right?” Perkins said. “About – because I was doing ESPN Radio, New York, and they were talking about the Knicks. And I’m like, ‘That is so false about the New York Knicks.’”
Both Barkley and O’Neal made comments about the Knicks and how they’d fare with certain opponents prior to the start of the playoffs.
Perkins then went on to say that the only way people would make comments about the Knicks’ chances was if they didn’t watch them.
“So, they brought up something about what Shaq and Charles said, and I was like, ‘Man, them guys don’t watch basketball anyway,’” Perkins said.
Perkins then said that Barkley and O’Neal “took it personal” in regards to his comments.
“So, next thing I know, they shooting they slugs at me,” Perkins said. “They punching at the punching bag even though I’d fold Chuck like a fresh set of clean sheets. Me and Shaq would just have to rumble in the jungle. But here’s the thing. I enjoyed it, man. I ain’t gon’ lie Scoop, I enjoyed it. The only problem I had with it is that – don’t call me no damn roach, bro. I ain’t on that.”
An NBA champion with the Boston Celtics, Perkins mentioned that he didn’t do any name calling of his own towards O’Neal and Barkley during their back and forth.
“You gon’ call me a roach?” Perkins said. “C’mon dog, that’s the worst of the worst. C’mon man, a roach? That’s what y’all on?”
The ESPN analyst then dove deeper into the disrespect that he felt from both O’Neal and Barkley.
“We kill roaches in Black neighborhoods,” Perkins said. “… Roaches were everywhere, bro. … From another Black man to another Black man, you can’t never call nobody no roach. You might as well spit in my face.”
The former Cavs big man did clarify that he doesn’t have any beef with the two NBA legends, who are both analysts for TNT.
“And I don’t have no beef with Charles or Shaq,” Perkins said. “My thing is the whole ‘roach’ thing. I don’t mind the punching bag. I don’t mind the – but the whole roach? Damn, bruh.”
It seems that Barkley and O’Neal went a little too far with their comments towards Perkins, but it’s nice to see the former Cavs center being a good sport about the entire interaction.
Perkins last played in the NBA during the 2017-18 season for the Cavs, but he’s done well for himself since then by becoming a well-known figure in the media world.
During his NBA career, Perkins played for the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, New Orleans Pelicans and Cavs. He was a first-round pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and ended up carving out a nice role for himself in the league, especially alongside Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in Boston.
