Report: There Was ‘Internal Disagreement’ About Cavs Signing Kevin Love to Extension

Although the Cleveland Cavaliers rebuild appears to be going in a positive direction, the team has had some disagreements about it in the past.

According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, there were mixed opinions within the organization on whether the team should have re-signed big man Kevin Love last summer:

“There was disagreement internally last summer over whether the Cavs should sign Love to that type of extension, and they might ultimately come to regret the final couple of years on the deal when Love will earn $60 million during his age 33 and 34 seasons. Altman remains adamant, however, that the Cavs are a better team today with Love on the roster, and he’s right.”

Love, 30, signed a massive four-year contract extension worth $120 million last offseason. While the deal helped locked down a star in the aftermath of four-time MVP LeBron James’ departure, it created a whopping future financial commitment for the Cavs.

In addition to the lucrative undertaking, Love has proved to be a liability at times. The 6-foot-10 power forward has an extensive history of getting injured. As a matter of fact, Love hasn’t played more than 60 games in each of the last three seasons with the Cavs.

Yet, the former All-Star has been a blessing in a multitude of other ways. Love put up 17.0 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this season. Furthermore, the veteran has been a strong voice in the Cavs’ young locker room.
