Kyrie Irving Says Going Back to Cleveland to Face Cavs Means Nothing

Although Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers share a ton of history, the crafty point guard says their upcoming reunion means nothing to him.

Irving, 27, played for the Cavs for the first six seasons of his career. In that span, the All-Star guard earned multiple awards, went to the NBA Finals three times and played a huge part in capturing the franchise’s 2016 championship.

Despite all that success, the 6-foot-3 guard still wanted more independence and requested a trade in the summer of 2017.

The Cavs shipped Irving to the Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a couple of draft picks, one of which later turned into outstanding rookie point guard Collin Sexton.

While the Cavs haven’t retained most of the players in the Irving deal, they are very pleased with Sexton’s production. The 20-year-old is putting up 16.2 points and and 3.0 rebounds per game this season.

Meanwhile, the former Rookie of the Year award winner and Celtics are having a messy season.

Marred by injuries, little chemistry and a lack of strong leadership by Irving, the franchise has struggled to be one of the league’s best teams this year, despite a very talented roster.

Irving is putting up 23.8 points, 7.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds a game this season.

The Cavs and Celtics duel on Tuesday in Cleveland.
