Cleveland Cavaliers center Tristan Thompson has missed the last six weeks of action due to a left foot injury. However, one new report suggests that he could make his long-awaited return on Saturday, when the Cavaliers host the Detroit Pistons at Quicken Loans Arena.
Joe Vardon of The Athletic quoted a source close to Thompson concerning a possible return:
“A source told me Tristan Thompson (left foot soreness) might play Saturday against the Pistons. His last game was Jan. 16 in Portland, after which the Cavs shut him down after a previously sprained left foot was sore. He’s missed 17 consecutive games. [Larry] Drew said Thompson practiced after the All-Star break and didn’t feel great the following day, which the team determined to mean he wasn’t ready. Thompson denies there was a setback, though a source close to him said he had a minor calf issue in addition to the sore foot. At any rate, if Thompson practices Friday, he could play Saturday or Sunday. I’m skeptical, but I thought I’d tell you what a source close to him said.”
When the 27-year-old Thompson has been able to play this season, he’s been a major contributor to the Cavaliers’ lineup. In his 35 games thus far, he’s averaged a double-double with 11.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, while also contributing an average of 2.1 assists per contest.
In addition, he’s also provided the team with solid leadership during a painful rebuilding year.
However, this is the second extended absence this year for the once-durable Thompson. Back in November, he missed 10 games with a sprained left foot.
Counting last night’s game in New York, Thompson has been unable to play in the last 17 games for the Cavs, who have a 15-47 record following Thursday’s comeback win.
