Cavs News: Cleveland Cavaliers Committed to 4 Players for 2020 Offseason

The roster outlook for the Cleveland Cavaliers next season is dependent upon their June draft selections and any transactions that take place during the offseason. However, following the 2019-20 campaign, one report indicates that the team may be committed to as few as four players.

Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com answered questions from fans on a variety of topics and was asked about potential free-agent signings this summer. In noting that the expectations for any vigorous pursuit of free agents are minimal because of salary-cap concerns, he stated that the team is rather looking toward 2020:

“They have set their sights on the 2020 offseason, when they will have much more financial flexibility.

“That summer, Cleveland is only committed to four players, which could become five if the Cavs pick up the team option on [Collin] Sexton’s contract.”

In contrast, this upcoming offseason will have the Cavaliers dealing with commitments to 11 of their players. In addition, David Nwaba can become a restricted free agent, assuming the Cavaliers extend a qualifying offer to him.

Once the 2020 offseason arrives, the contracts of Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith, Brandon Knight and Jordan Clarkson will come off the books. In the case of Smith, he’s only guaranteed $3.87 million for the 2019-20 season, but the remaining three players are due over $47 million next season.

In the case of Sexton, he would be due just under $5 million should the Cavaliers pick up their option on his contract.

In the meantime, the 14-47 Cavs will seek to get back on winning track on Thursday night when they face the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
