Larry Drew wasn’t pleased with Collin Sexton’s decision-making on play that led to his ejection

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Larry Drew made it clear that Collin Sexton made the wrong play late in a game against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.

Down 14 points in the fourth quarter, Sexton received the ball from Rodney Hood during a fast break. The former had one defender in front of him, Jaron Blossomgame to his left, and Jordan Clarkson to his right. It should have been an easy scoring opportunity for the Cavs. Surprisingly, however, Sexton took a midrange jumper from the foul line.

Hornets star point guard Kemba Walker clearly fouled Sexton as the latter attempted the jump shot, but no whistle was blown. This particular sequence made Drew irate, as he furiously ran onto center court and threw verbal jabs at the referees. As a result, he was ejected from the game.

After the game, Drew voiced his opinion on Sexton’s decision-making on that particular play.

“I don’t think it was the right decision that Collin made to shoot a pull-up in that situation,” Drew said.

Sexton, however, said that his blunder was all part of a continuing learning process.

“Everything is a learning process,” Sexton said. “I felt like I ran the scheme pretty well and certain drives I wish I had back, but just flow of the game.”

Putting this play aside, Sexton has shown tremendous potential so far in his rookie season. He has fully earned his spot in the starting lineup and promises to be a key piece in the Cavs’ rebuild.
