Collin Sexton Has Already Surpassed Kyrie Irving in Key Scoring Aspect

Collin Sexton is enjoying quite a leap in production as of late, and in Saturday night’s win over the Washington Wizards, the rookie point guard did something that not even Kyrie Irving was able to do during his own rookie year back in the 2011-12 season.

“Sexton, we need to acknowledge, is having quite a rookie campaign,” Joe Vardon of The Athletic wrote. “It hasn’t translated into wins, but he’s scored in double figures in 16 consecutive games (all starts). Kyrie Irving only made it 15 games in a row scoring at least 10 points as a rookie. LeBron was the Cavs’ last rookie to go at least 16. Both were named Rookie of the Year.”

Since cracking the Cavs’ starting lineup, Sexton has averaged 18.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. He’s also shooting 47.4 percent from the 3-point line. While the very start to his first season in the NBA was filled with growing pains, he is now putting forward a serious argument to be considered a top Rookie of the Year contender.

Sexton reflected upon his own progression following the Cavs’ double-digit win.

“From the first game to now, it’s totally, totally different,” Sexton said. “I feel like in video, I’m starting to understand a lot more now than I did at first.”

There’s no doubt that Sexton has room to grow. There is also no doubt that, at the moment, his huge strides are not helping the Cavs get their win-loss record back on track. Despite that, however, it seems quite clear that the Cavs are achieving exactly what they hoped they would when they traded Irving for that first-round draft pick back in the summer of 2017.

They were hoping to get a player who would not only be able to replace Irving, but who would be able to become the face of the franchise for years to come.

Considering how the first few months of his NBA career have gone, it’s starting to look like Sexton could be just that kind of player.
