Report: Collin Sexton Rejected Cavs Veteran’s Offer to Help Him

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Collin Sexton has had an up-and-down rookie season thus far, and while veteran guard George Hill reportedly offered to help teach Sexton about how to improve his game, Sexton rebuffed him.

The report came from Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, who broke down some of what is taking place in Cleveland behind closed doors.

“George Hill has offered to mentor the teenager, teach him how to play defense. But Sexton has, to this point, rebuffed that. While teammates don’t think he’s a bad kid and recognize he’s trying his best in an extremely tough situation, they are also growing frustrated with Sexton because he doesn’t show anger or disappointment following losses.”

Coming into the NBA, Sexton was praised for his defensive intensity. However, based on this report, it seems his teammates feel he is lacking on the defensive side of the court. Though Sexton has certainly showed signs of growing pains, it hasn’t been all bad.

Sexton is currently averaging 11.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. He has recorded double-digit point totals in all but three games so far and was fundamental in the Cavs’ lone victory this season when he finished the game with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

The report that Sexton rejected Hill’s offer is somewhat troubling, but it does not necessarily indicate that the rookie isn’t looking to learn and grow. So far, Sexton has undergone a trial by fire both on and off the court.

Hopefully, he is able to learn from experience as his rookie season continues.
