The struggles in trying to integrate four new players into the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ system in a short period of time have resulted in three losses since play has resumed after the All-Star break. As a result, Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue said after Thursday night’s loss that he’s planning on simplifying the team’s offense to help shorten that learning curve.
“Lot of times, just calling plays on the fly and guys are like, ‘I’m over here, I’m over there,’ it’s just…” Lue said. “We gotta somehow continue to just keep getting better, keep adding, but also just trying to keep it simple for right now for these new guys until they’re able to catch up.”
Asked to clarify whether that meant a more simplified offense would be the solution, Lue offered confirmation:
“I think we have to,” Lue said. “I mean, like I said, it’s not fair to those guys coming in the middle of the year and try and pick up our whole offense and what we’re doing. You know, we’re trying to add slow, but you know, it’s still just taking away from those guys being aggressive and being who they are. So, it’s a fine line, we’ve just gotta keep juggling and, you know, find the time for everything and go from there.”
Those four new players: George Hill, Jordan Clarkson, Rodney Hood and Larry Nance Jr. have had varying degrees of success since play resumed, though not on a consistent basis. Among this quartet, Hill has had the most drastic contrasts, with the veteran’s point totals in the Cavs’ five post-break games offering clear evidence: 6, 18, 2, 26 and 7. Hill’s two double-digit scoring efforts coincided with Cleveland’s only two wins during this stretch.
Lue will get his first chance to see this new plan in action on Saturday night, when the Cavaliers host the Denver Nuggets. Tip-off for that game will be just after 7:30 p.m. ET.
