Report: Cavs Willing to Trade Tristan Thompson, Eyeing DeAndre Jordan Deal

Something has to change for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After Thursday night’s blowout loss to the Toronto Raptors, the Cavs have lost seven of their last 10 games.

It’s not entirely clear what the answer is for the ailing Cavs, but recent reports indicate that Cleveland will try to make a move to improve its roster. Any potential move would have to take place before the NBA trade deadline arrives on Feb. 8.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, big man Tristan Thompson is being made available in trade talks.

“As teams pick up trade activity before the trade deadline, the Cavaliers are shaping up to be perhaps the most fascinating contending team,” he wrote. “They have two first-round draft picks — including the heralded Brooklyn Nets’ selection via the Irving trade — but the superstar player whom the franchise could pursue with that pick has not been made available. Multiple NBA teams have cited Tristan Thompson as an asset Cleveland is willing to move in the right deal, such as one for the Los Angeles Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan. Nevertheless, the superstar talent of Oklahoma City’s Paul George or New Orleans’ DeMarcus Cousins, each deserving of that Nets first-rounder, won’t see the light in this trade market as of right now, league sources said, as those teams are fully focused on winning with each respective player.”

Once thought of as a main contributor for the Eastern Conference’s best team, Thompson has seen a dip in his production ever since the 2013-14 NBA season. So far this season, the 6-foot-9 big man is averaging just 5.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Still, at just 26 years of age, Thompson could have considerable value in a trade.

The clock is ticking on the Cavs’ ability to move players before the trade deadline. Only time will tell if the clock is also ticking on Thompson’s time in Cleveland.
