Cavs News: Cavaliers Choose Not to Re-Sign Derrick Williams to Second 10-Day Contract

In a move that appears to be connected to Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, the Cleveland Cavaliers chose not to re-sign forward Derrick Williams to another 10-day contract on Tuesday. However, depending on what transpires in the time leading up to then, Williams may be re-signed by the team after Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline, though the possibility does exist that he could sign with another team prior to that time.

Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal reported on Tuesday night:

“For now, the Cavs have elected not to re-sign him to save on their luxury tax bill, since there obviously were no games or practices over the All-Star break, and to leave the roster spot open in case something presents itself in a trade between now and Thursday. As it stands, the Cavs have two open roster spots.”

After having been released by the Miami Heat on Feb. 6, Williams was signed by Cleveland just days later and has played in four games for the Cavaliers, averaging 9.8. points and 3.0 rebounds.

Williams remaining on the roster had appeared to be a certainty, given LeBron James’ comments about his performance previously.

“We hope that this is a long-term thing,” James said. “Obviously, we know that he’s on a 10-day contract, but we believe it’s going to be long term.”

In addition, Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue had also offered praise for Williams’ performance, noting his versatility on defense and his overall athleticism.

Cleveland’s first practice since the All-Star break will take place on Wednesday afternoon.
