Report: Cavs to Work Out Three Veteran Point Guards in Hopes of Inking a Deal

After a public call for help at the backup point guard position from Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, it seems that general manager David Griffin has responded.

That’s because, according to ESPN, the Cavs have invited Mario Chalmers, Lance Stephenson, Kirk Hinrich, and others to a workout session in the hopes of inking a deal for the 2016-17 season. Depending on how well the candidates perform, a new backup point guard could be signed by the All-Star break.

The Cavs currently have one roster spot available, but could open up another if they elect to waive reserve center Chris Andersen, who has been deemed out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL.

The 30-year-old Chalmers seems to be the prime candidate for the Cavs at the moment as he has championship experience and familiarity playing with James in their four seasons together on the Miami Heat. Chalmers is now fully recovered from a right Achilles tear, although he hasn’t played a game in nearly a year.

Similarly, Stephenson is finally healthy following rehabilitation from a groin injury that required surgery in early November. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 9.7 points and 4.8 assists in his most recent season with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Hinrich, 36, could also be a suitable fit for the Cavs as he is known for his perimeter defense and playmaking ability, two areas in which the Cavs are desperately lacking. The point guard has career averages of 10.9 points on 37.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc to go along with 4.8 assists.
