Cavs News: Cavaliers Officially Re-Sign J.R. Smith, Waive Another Player to Make Room

The Cleveland Cavaliers reduced their roster on Saturday in order to accommodate the arrival of J.R. Smith by announcing that they had released reserve point guard Toney Douglas. The team announced the move in hailing the signing of Smith. They had signed Douglas on October 3, but needed a roster spot for Smith, who agreed to a four-year, $57 million deal on Friday night.

Douglas was brought into camp as a potential option behind Kyrie Irving at point guard, but ended up seeing minimal action during the preseason. That currently leaves the trio of Jordan McRae, Dahntay Jones and DeAndre Liggins battling for two spots on the roster. One potential addition to the team in the coming weeks could be current free agent Mario Chalmers, who’s currently rehabilitating from a torn Achilles.

The Cavaliers have one preseason game remaining. That contest will take place on Tuesday night at the Schottenstein Center and will be used as a dry run for the season opener on Oct. 25 against the New York Knicks.
