Cleveland Cavaliers: Top Three Draft Prospects for the 2015 NBA Draft

3. Robert Upshaw 7’0″ – 264 Pounds – University of Washington

Robert Upshaw of Washington represents a tempting gamble when the Cavs have a chance to pick in June. Upshaw is a monster standing at 7’0″ with a 7’4″ wingspan and surprising mobility for a 264-pound goliath.

Upshaw’s real worth at the next level will likely come on the defensive end. At the time of his dismissal (we’ll get to that in a second) Upshaw led the nation in blocked shots. When he wasn’t blocking shots, Upshaw forced opposing players to alter their shots or just flat out give up attacking the rim.

Where many center prospects are tall but lanky, Upshaw is just beastly. He possesses a strong base and is rarely ever moved from his position once he is set. With such a large frame, Upshaw also excels at setting strong screens. He gets in good position and absolutely eclipses his man.

So why is he floating around the Cavs’ pick at the end of the first round? In the last three years Upshaw has been dismissed from Fresno State and from Washington. Details are few regarding Upshaw’s dismissal, making his interviews with front offices this summer crucial.

When he did play, Upshaw displayed a variable motor. When engaged, few could contend with his size and skill down low. He physically dominated opponents and completely changed how the opposing team ran their offense.

Other times Upshaw lacked focus, was out of position, played lazy defense, and gave up easy baskets. Whether Upshaw makes it to the NBA will be largely determined by how much the opportunity means to him, and whether he’s willing to put in the work to make the most of it.

If he can get his head on straight (no guarantees there) then Upshaw has the tools and ability to have a long and successful career in the NBA.
