LeBron James: ‘I Apologize I Haven’t Been Above The Rim’

Let’s face it, LeBron James‘ athleticism is starting to slow down, and this year, it’s really starting to show.

James is rapidly approaching his 30th birthday, which would mark around the time that professional athletes start declining athletically. Not saying that LeBron’s skill set won’t be there, but the old “with no regard for human life” LeBron is probably a thing of the past.

“I apologize I haven’t been above the rim, but I’m in the lineup,” James said with a smile, responding to a reporter’s question after the Cleveland Cavaliers’ morning shootaround.

They play the New Orleans Pelicans at the Quicken Loans Arena on Monday night. “Whatever it takes to help us win.”

LeBron has dunked just three times in the past five games and is on pace to dunk the ball just 49 times this year. How many times did he rock the rim last year with the Miami Heat? Try 196 times.

Contrary to what you’ve been seeing on your television set, James is actually attacking the rim at a higher clip this year (25%) compared to last year at just 22%.

It’s important to note that James has used the phrase “but I’m in the lineup” in previous years, which symbolizes that he’s playing a bit hurt. However, James noted, “If you ask me if I’m hurt I’m going to say I’m playing so I’m all right.”

“I understand those are huge momentum plays,” James said. “We haven’t had too many fastbreak opportunities, as I have in the past. In the halfcourt they kind of put a lot of bodies in front of me. I’ve been able to find open guys.”

The Cavs welcome the Pelicans to the Q on Monday night as they take on a surging Anthony Davis, who is averaging a ludicrous 24.4 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 4.4 blocks per game.
